Promoting Equitable Access to Language Services for Families of Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN)

Project Overview

This project’s goal is to improve the quality and use of language access services in the healthcare setting for families with limited English proficiency. Family Voices and our partners at the American Academy of Pediatrics will work alongside families with lived experience to develop educational tools and strategies for families, community health workers, and healthcare providers to improve the way they use language-access services.

The Law

The legal foundation for language access states:  The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Provisions of this civil rights act forbade discrimination because of sex, as well as race in hiring, promoting, and firing.

Health care setting: Title VI of the act prevents discrimination by programs and activities that receive federal funds, including hospitals and other health care facilities.
