There are two big healthcare news items this week, both generated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS):

  • CMS issued its long-expected Medicaid “block grant” guidance, outlining how states can obtain waivers to gain greater flexibility in their Medicaid programs (for certain adults) if they agree to limits on the federal Medicaid contributions they receive.
  • CMS issued the proposed 2021 Notice of Benefit and Payment Parameters, which sets rules for health insurers and marketplaces under the Affordable Care Act.

Also in this Update: The Food and Drug Administration approved the first drug for treatment of peanut allergies, and the Department of Transportation issued a proposed rule on traveling with service and emotional support animals.
