Final Rule on Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)
On February 13, the Department of Defense (DoD) issued a final rule (PDF) about the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP), which was created to enhance and improve DoD support around the world for military families with special needs (medical or educational). The rule addresses procedures for identifying a family member with special needs and coordinating travel for family members of active duty Service members who meet the DoD criteria for the program. It also describes procedures for processing DoD civilian employees who have family members with special needs for an overseas assignment, and provides family support services to military families with special needs.
