Our hearts are heavy in the wake of the horrific act of gun violence that occurred in Minnesota this past weekend. This tragedy took the lives of Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and severely wounded Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who are still recovering from multiple gunshot wounds.
John, Yvette, and their daughter have consistently brought passion and commitment to supporting the disability community. John has worked tirelessly at both the state and federal levels to improve systems of care, especially for people with disabilities. In 2001, he was appointed to the federal Interagency Coordinating Council on Early Childhood Intervention, where he collaborated with Family Voices National staff, parent leaders, and federal partners—forming long-lasting friendships and partnerships. Those who have worked with John often speak of his great sense of humor, ready smile, and deep passion for serving others.
John also served as Chair of the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities from 2015 to 2020. The current Chair, Lee Shervheim, describes him so well:
“Senator Hoffman is a gregarious leader with the strongest sense of public service I have ever encountered. He is everywhere—learning, helping, supporting, and listening. He is also a skilled leader—guiding major legislative initiatives in the areas of funding for disability services, protecting civil and legal rights of those with disabilities, and supporting all areas of inclusion and independence for individuals with disabilities. He is a champion!”
On a personal note, I’ve had the honor of calling John a colleague and friend for 25 years. Even in the busiest moments, he always takes the time to connect, listen, and reflect. That kind of presence is something I hold with deep gratitude.
The staff and Board of Family Voices of Minnesota stand in heartfelt solidarity with the Hoffman family as they begin the long journey of healing. We also grieve the profound loss of Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. Their legacy of public service and commitment to Minnesota will not be forgotten. As a State Representative and Speaker, Melissa played a vital role in advancing legislation that benefited people with disabilities and all Minnesotans. Her leadership will be sorely missed.
We extend our deepest condolences to their children, extended family, friends, and all who mourn their passing. Representative Hortman’s children said it best in their statement:
“Treat each other with kindness and respect. The best way to honor our parents’ memory is to do something, whether big or small, to make our community just a little better for someone else.”
Let us take those words to heart.
