Family Voices stands with the autism and neurodivergent communities who take pride in their identities and have much to contribute to our world. Family Voices strongly believes that how we discuss autism and disability matters. Autism is a form of neurodivergence. Neurodivergence is one aspect of human diversity, like hair color, body size, disability, and many other characteristics. Autism and neurodivergence are not something to fear or cure.
Family Voices is committed to transforming the systems of care that often create burden for autistic individuals and their families. We support authentic family engagement in improving these systems so they work better for all children and families. Our policy priorities include expanding Medicaid and peer support, ensuring that families have access to care in their preferred language, and supporting the transition from pediatric to adult health care, all of which can have profound impacts on the health and quality of life of autistic individuals and their families.
American Academy of Pediatrics President Dr. Susan J. Kressly says, “There is no single root cause of autism and there is no single medication that will give every autistic child or adult what they need.” Family Voices stands behind strong, evidence-based science. People with autism and disabilities must be a part of the ongoing research and discussions around their communities.
